Diego Maradona (Argentina) - Maradona missed a penalty in the quarter-final shootout with Yugoslavia in 1990, his feeble kick being saved by Tomislav Ivkovic. But his team won the shootout 3-2.

Michel Platini (France) - Platini put his spot kick over the bar in the quarter-final shootout with Brazil in 1986 - but his team won 4-3.

Socrates (Brazil) - Socrates took a casual penalty in the same shootout, saved by French keeper Joel Bats.

Zico (Brazil) - Bats also saved Zico's regular penalty kick in the second half of the same match in 1986.

Roberto Baggio (Italy) - Baggio skied the final spot kick in the 1994 World Cup final against Brazil over the bar. Brazil won the shootout 3-2.

Franco Baresi (Italy) - Baresi missed the first penalty in the same shootout by putting the ball over the bar.
