Paul Reynolds, CEO of Canaccord Genuity Group Inc., is in serious condition in hospital after encountering an "unexpected medical emergency" while competing in a triathlon in Hawaii.

Mr. Reynolds was competing in the Lavaman Waikoloa Triathlon on Sunday morning, when he got into trouble during the swim portion of the race.

Mr. Reynolds "called out for help and then went under the water," wrote Lori Cannon, who identified herself as a nurse and posted a comment on a story featured in Hawaii News Now. According to Ms. Cannon, Mr. Reynolds was immediately pulled from the water by safety personnel and brought to shore on a jet ski. He was administered CPR and transported to hospital.

"Our entire family is grateful to your superb team of experts. Your team did an incredible job," wrote John Reynolds, who identified himself as "Paul's dad" in another comment on the same website.

"He remains in serious but improving condition," Canaccord Genuity said in a statement released early Monday morning. "He is awake and responsive with his family by his side. We are optimistic for Paul's full and speedy recovery"

A spokesperson for Canaccord Genuity would not comment on the specifics of the incident other than saying it happened during a family vacation.

Ms. Cannon and John Reynolds did not respond to requests for interviews.

Mr. Reynolds, who is 52 years old, is being treated at the North Hawaii Community Hospital. The Lavaman Waikoloa Triathlon, which is held annually, consists of a 1,500-metre swim, a 40-kilometre bike ride and a 10-km run.

Chairman David Kassie has taken over as CEO on an interim basis until Mr. Reynolds recovers.
