Peter Buchanan, a senior economist at CIBC World Markets, died of a heart attack Thursday night, according to his colleague Avery Shenfeld.

Buchanan, 62, had worked at the Toronto-based bank for 25 years, said Shenfeld. Before that, Buchanan worked at Ontario's finance ministry. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and University of Toronto.

"He was the quiet genius in our group," Shenfeld, CIBC chief economist, said by telephone Tuesday from Toronto. "It's been a tough few days for us."

CIBC World Markets is a unit of Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.
