Toronto Mayor Rob Ford says a $1.2-million bike station under City Hall is a waste of taxpayer funds.
The city's government management committee Monday voted in favour of the 380-space station, which would include shower and change facilities. The issue will go before council next month.
Councillor Doug Ford, a member of the committee who voted against the station, teed off on the plan shortly after the vote, calling it part of the "gravy train."
Mayor Ford, when asked about the station at a road work event Tuesday, also expressed his disapproval.
"Are you talking the showers?" he asked. "It's absolutely ludicrous. That's ridiculous. I'm going to try to kill it at council. That's a complete waste of taxpayers' money."
If the bike station was built it would mean 24 vehicle spots inside the City Hall parking lot would be lost. Councillor Ford said that would also mean the loss of $70,000 in annual revenue.
Councillor Paul Ainslie, the government management committee's chair, disputed the lost revenue claim Monday, saying many of the vehicle spots already sit empty.
Mr. Ainslie said the bike station would be worth the investment if it gets people out of their cars.
