A New Brunswick Liberal politician who was just elected last month says he is quitting after realizing that the hours and travel that come with the job would have a negative impact on his health and family.

Gary Keating was elected for Saint John East in the provincial election on Sept. 22.

Keating said he decided that public life wasn't for him following deep reflection and he apologizes to the people of the riding, adding that he hopes they understand his reasons for stepping down.

"After careful personal reflection and the unconditional love and support from my family I have decided, at this particular point in my life, that my family must come first and be my priority," said Keating in a press release.

"I wish to offer my deepest apologies to the people of Saint John East. They placed their trust in me and I cannot help but feel that I have let them down."

Keating said Premier Brian Gallant has accepted his decision.

Before being elected, Keating was a high school principal.
