One captivating image a day, the reason it was chosen and how you can shoot similar pictures.
Photo tip for April 4: The pattern of the fountains and walkway the boy is riding on is what grabs your attention. But also having the bright yellow bike and blue helmet adds some nice colour in the centre of the frame that really pops on the dark background of the walkway. Shooting from above negates any other information that would take away from the patterns and boy.
Photo tip for April 3: When composing your picture always have a look around to see what you might be missing. By looking up the photographer captures a great action shot that really works with the unusual angle taken. Always do a 360 and look up and down since another great photo could be right before you eyes. A great drill is to stand in one spot and see how many different photos you can produce.
Photo tip for April 2: By using longer lens and a shallow depth of field the background blurs out to allow for the subjects to really stand out. The timing perfect in getting both the heron catching the fish and the penguin jumping off the board.
Photo tip for March 30: Sandra Roemer used a macro lens to capture water droplets reflecting on the back of a CD. It was selected as the best submission on the theme of repeating patterns. Here's what she had to say: "The NIKON 105 MM macro lens was pointed directly downwards on a tripod to align with the plane of the CD on which tiny droplets of water are applied with an eye dropper. It was shot at f 3.3 at 1/100 of a sec. at ISO 200. For lighting, a small light fixture with florescent tube was handheld and moved around and overhead until the rainbow of colours appeared. Even a slight movement of the light direction creates variations of colour. Planning a good composition is the other part of the equation."
Why we chose it: The patterns work throughout this photograph. From the circle shapes of the water droplets to the colour pattern created within them. We just kept coming back to this photo. It's a welcome surprise from all the other patterns submitted. A great idea and well executed image.
