There once was a time when yoga pants were for, you know, yoga. But these days, you'll see people wearing the stretchy, form-fitting pants everywhere – on the street, in the malls, in grocery stores and at cafés.

One Ottawa-area school, however, is drawing the line when it comes to wearing yoga pants in its classrooms. St. Joseph Catholic High School in Barrhaven is cracking down on yoga pants and leggings because they are too tight and too revealing, and is sending students home if they wear them without covering up, CTV reports.

The school told CTV it is simply enforcing an existing dress code policy. Mardi de Kemp, the board's spokeswoman, said a reminder issued on Tuesday was a regular school announcement.

One student explained they were warned that the consequences of flouting the ban are serious: "The first time is a detention, the second time is a suspension, the third time, you get expelled from the school."

The crackdown has sparked a yoga-pants rebellion. (It has also possibly given a publicity boost to students' brand of choice, Lululemon.) Students told the broadcaster many are wearing the pants anyway, and are circulating a petition, called "save Lulus," which they said has collected more than 250 signatures.

"Since so many people have been outraged, they all kind of banded together and wore Lululemons," student Rianna Zanbelt said. "...I think they should be allowed to wear what they want.... Some people use that as a form of art, and, like, to express themselves."

Another student Norwich Sakyi suggested, "If this continues, I guess we should just do, like, school uniforms. 'Cuz it makes it easier."

Of course, even requiring teens to wear uniforms is no guarantee they'll dress according to the rules.

Are yoga pants okay as everyday pants? Do you wear them outside the yoga studio?
