Your marriage is in trouble. You’ve announced your split. You may be ready to divide your assets, but are you ready to give up your wedding ring?
Heidi Klum is the latest celebrity to be spotted wearing a wedding ring after a highly publicized breakup. US Weekly noted the supermodel was photographed with a gold band still on her left ring finger Wednesday, after she and husband singer Seal issued a statement Sunday night announcing their separation amid rumours of an impending divorce.
Earlier this week, Seal told Ellen DeGeneres that he would continue wearing his wedding band.
“I think it’s just pretty much a token of how I feel about this woman. We have eight years. Eight wonderful years together,” he said on her talk show. “Just because we have decided to separate doesn’t necessarily mean you take off your ring and you’re no longer connected to that person.”
But perhaps inevitably, where there’s a wedding ring, there’s speculation over whether reconciliation is possible.
Actor Ashton Kutcher was recently photographed still wearing his wedding band after he and wife actress Demi Moore split up last year. And Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver have been seen wearing their wedding rings, in spite of their separation this past May (after it was revealed the former California governor fathered a son with the family’s housekeeper).
In each case, the gossip mill has questioned whether the rings signify the couples are trying to get back together.
If they do decide to ditch the rings, there are plenty of options for dealing with the symbolic bands. You can have it melted down and shaped into a bullet, for instance, or sell it for cold, hard cash.)
What do you think? When should separating couples remove their wedding rings?
