How to get a divorce: Italian man brings mother on his honeymoon

The Globe and Mail

When an Italian bride said “I do,” there’s no way she meant she would do this.

Even though Italian men have a reputation as being mama’s boys (seriously, there have been studies) nothing can really prepare you for this level of mama boy-dom.

Mamma Mia, what was this guy thinking?

He was thinking he would bring his mother along on his honeymoon, that’s what. So that’s what he did, and now his 36-year-old wife has filed for divorce, according to the ANSA news agency.

The woman, identified in court documents as Marianna C., arrived at Rome's Fiumicino airport expecting to fly off to Paris for her honeymoon only to discover her husband had brought along his mother. Even though she “politely” tried to object, her husband said he “couldn’t leave his sick mother alone,” according to court documents.

Amazingly, all three of them got on the plane. Perhaps even more amazingly, the honeymoon with mom in tow isn’t what ultimately led Marianna C. to want to end the marriage. What was the nail in the coffin? According to ANSA, after the honeymoon, the mother-in-law also spent the Christmas holidays with the couple – which pushed Marianna over the edge.

Her husband’s “excessive ties” to his mother “made it impossible to establish a healthy conjugal relationship,” Marianna said in court documents.

Dealing with in-laws is often difficult, but there needs to be boundaries, and this guy seems to have stepped waaaaay over them.

Which leads to one question and one request. Question: If you were the wife, would you have got on the plane? And the request: What’s the biggest in-laws-related argument you’ve had with your partner?
