Take a page from the 20th century – a 10-week guide on how to bring back the adventure of summer.

Think about any great 1980s' movie of childhood adventure – E.T., The Goonies and their beloved ilk – and you realize one thing was essential: a bike. Whether the kids were racing away from government agents or out to find pirate treasure, bikes were literally the preferred vehicles for chasing dreams. Maybe your kids aren't sheltering an alien, but that shouldn't stop them from enjoying the sense of freedom and discovery that a bike can provide. Helmet them. Pad them. Do what you must to bolster your own need for their safety – and then set them free. They might race down to a creek or jump off curbs outside the house. Best case scenario, they make up their own game, the rules of which haven't even been imagined yet.
