What do a corrupt vice-president, Orange-clad convicts and a snow queen have in common? Ask mom and dad.

BabyCenter.com's annual survey of baby names shows parents are looking to their favourite TV shows and kid movies for inspiration this year, especially Netflix originals and one popular Disney movie.

The parenting site, which bases their 2014 rankings on 400,000 births that have been registered on BabyCentre.com, establishes a correlation between trending names such as Frank, Piper and Elsa and trending shows, such as Orange is the New Black, House of Cards and Frozen.

The survey found that 20 per cent of moms found their inspiration from TV show characters.

"People are going to celebrities for names and character names are really huge," said Jennifer Moss, Founder and CEO of BabyNames.com.

For the future, Moss predicts an influx of Game of Thrones characters, as well as more Disney Princesses. Here's a breakdown of some of BabyCentre.com's survey:

Although Netflix show-inspired names are not among the top 10 this year, the popularity of names from shows such as Orange is the New Black and House of Cards is on the rise.

Galina, who plays Red on the Netflix prison drama, saw the highest jump at 67 per cent. The name Nicky rose 35 per cent, while Piper and Larry increased 28 per cent.

And no, the name of the emotionally unstable character, Crazy Eyes, did not make the list.

From House of Cards, lead actress Robin Wright, who plays Claire Underwood, appears to have inspired a 65-per-cent increase in the name Wright. Frank, the first name of the main character played by Kevin Spacey, rose 19 per cent and Garrett rose 16 per cent. For girls, Claire increased 14 per cent, Zoey 13 per cent and Robin 12 per cent.

The kid movie effect

Disney’s Frozen and Warner Bros. The Lego Movie rank as the top influencers of baby names in 2014.

Emmett, the lead character of The Lego Movie, jumped 26 places this year up to number 35 on the top 100 boy’s names list. The stuck-in-your-head song “Everything is Awesome,” performed by Canadian Indie duo Tegan and Sara, also had an effect: Tegan rose 300 places, but still isn’t in the top 100 while Sara remained in the top 50.

And characters Elsa and Anna from Frozen rose in popularity. Anna jumped 25 places to 44 on the list of girl’s names and Elsa leaped more than 100 spots, but fell short of the top 100.

The Shonda Rhymes effect

Shows directed and produced by Shonda Rhymes has a noticeable influence on 2014 baby names. Characters from dramas such as Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder, rose in popularity.

Grey’s Anatomy character name Arizona went up 35 per cent and Callie up 30 per cent. Jackson, meanwhile, is the top boy’s name for the second consecutive year. Olivia from Scandal is the third-most popular girl’s name.

How to Get Away With Murder character names may be the ones to watch in 2015. The names Annalise and Connor increased 5 per cent, and Asher and Rebecca showed small jumps.

Other popular destination names for girls are Sienna, Paris, Kensington, Aspen, Ireland and Egypt. Boston, Denver, Dallas and Milan gained momentum on the boys list.

Derek Jeter

And parents appear to have taken the Captain’s goodbye tour this year to heart. Misguided Yankee fans have made the name Jeter a hit (so to speak). The long-time short stop for the New York Yankees retired this year, receiving accolades and ovations in nearly every park he visited in 2014. The name increased by a whopping 82 per cent.
