On Oct. 21, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute opened its newest show, Death Becomes Her: A Century of Mourning Attire. It may seem like a strange subject for a fashion exhibit, but funerals – along with the conventions and dress associated with them – have long been barometers of style, even sources of inspiration. Take the funereal-chic mantilla, oversized sunglasses and sombre ensembles of Paris blogger Diane Pernet, who would also be more than comfortable in designer Jennifer Behr’s silk turban with veil or Dolce & Gabbana’s high-collared lace frocks. With Halloween approaching, it’s not an inappropriate look. Throw in a Gothic-style chandelier and a beautiful black rug and you’d have yourself a real goodbye party.
