The question

Can you recommend a foundation that stands up to hot flashes? In fact, any makeup tips you have for menopausal women would be greatly appreciated.

The answer

There are quite a few sweat-proof options to choose from when it comes to makeup.

When selecting primers, foundations and concealers, which are your base cosmetics and touch your skin first, you need to look for the words "oil-free" and "waterproof," qualities that will help them stay on for the better part of the day. (By the same token, avoid products containing silicone.)

In terms of application, thin layers of foundation applied sparingly will mitigate running when a sudden rush of heat and perspiration occurs. My preferred method is to use a dampened non-latex makeup sponge and, with some foundation on one end, sweep the sponge across the areas you wish to cover. The result is light, thin and natural-looking (and your face won't slide off when a hot flash occurs).

Beyond foundations, products such as waterproof mascaras and liquid or gel liners are also good for countering menopausal symptoms. To colour lips and cheeks, try using a lip stain in both of those areas: The colour will withstand any sweaty situations you find yourself in and pretty much last until you take it off with remover.
