The question

I'm a woman of a certain age and I'm having trouble finding eyeliners and eyeshadows that adhere to my somewhat-drooping lids and stay put. Any suggestions?

The answer

I've got two words to add to your cosmetic vocabulary: primer and waterproof. A primer acts as a grab-all for any product layered on top and builds a thin barrier between oily skin and your makeup.

The key to an eyelid primer is to use it sparingly and blend it evenly over the areas you plan on applying product. My favourite, both in my professional and personal kit, is Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer Potion as it comes in four shades and works as a highlighter, too.

Waterproof makeup is just as important as primer. Pencil and gel liners in waterproof formulas will stay in place and allow you to achieve softer, smokier edge to your liner, which is better than hard-edge liners when you have mature skin.

A quick alternative to avoid transient liner and shadow is to skip them altogether and curl your lashes before applying waterproof mascara to make your eyes pop. Just remember to use an eye-makeup remover for waterproof products.
