What are we looking for?
After taking a look at the TSX Venture 50 list of top performing stocks on Canada's junior exchange earlier this week, we are going to turn our eye to the big board and look for some of the top performing small-capitalization stocks on the TSX.
More about today's screen
We're looking at TSX-listed companies with market capitalizations between $50-million and $250-million.
We'll rely on Globe Investor's market data to isolate the universe of stocks and then grab the top 25 based on share price performance over the last year.
We'll grab the price-to-earnings ratio and yield for each of the names that make the cut, as well as 52-week highs and lows and a year-to-date percentage change, just to see what you end up getting with this sort of screen and what you have to pay to get it.
What did we find?
More than 290 companies made it into the initial universe of stocks and, as universes go, it's a fairly hot one. More than half of the small caps we looked at while compiling this list are up better than 50 per cent over the last year and more than a third have at least doubled.
And, at the very top of the list, these 25 stocks have obviously been on fire.
BNK Petroleum might have faced a few headwinds immediately after it was spun out of Bankers Petroleum in the summer of 2008, but since this time last year it has been on an absolute tear. It's popped up in Globe Investor a couple times over the past year, as we've noted insider buying has remained strong despite the solid run it has had, and it has managed to pull in some additional financing along the way as well.
Three of the names here are relatively recent graduates from the Venture Exchange. Nevada Copper, Copper Mountain Mining and BioExx Specialty Proteins all joined Canada's big board in the last three years, with BioExx just making the jump this month.
