Performance

8.0 Ford offers the same 3.5-litre EcoBoost V-6 that's available in its large SUVs, offering up 310 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque, able to haul a maximum 4,650-pound payload, and tow up to 7,500 pounds. That payload max is greater than its GM and Chrysler rivals, says Ford.

Looks

7.5 This work van is certainly more modern than the ancient E-Series, but all full-size work vans are basically boxes on wheels, even if increasingly slimmer. There are many choices here, with three body lengths, two wheelbases and three roof heights; Ford says there are more configurations available on Transit than anything else in this class. Ford kept the base roof height low for businesses that work in underground parking lots, but also dropped the floor and kept the extended lengths available at the lower heights to open up interior space.

Interior

9.0 The design has improved, with a more modern look and feel.

Technology

8.0 The MyFord Touch infotainment system adds fleet-friendly connectivity options. Lane-keeping and driver alert options have been added and, perhaps most vitally for cargo vans with no rear windows or an inside rear-view mirror, a back up camera. A front parking assist system would be helpful for a big van likely to be manoeuvred in tight spaces, but instead the Transit features scuff-resistant lower and side body cladding.

The Verdict

8.0 Ford has a modern, competitive work van on offer, with class-leading flexibility and refinement.

Correction: An earlier version of this review incorrectly stated that the Ford Transit is a front-wheel drive vehicle. In fact, it is rear-wheel drive.
