Whether it be the quest to improve fuel efficiency, driverless cars, safety technology or dashboard infotainment, the car industry is all about innovation.

So it was no surprise that upstart electric auto maker Tesla finished third behind only Apple and Google in an annual ranking of innovative firms by Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

In fact, four auto makers were ranked in the top 10, with Toyota at sixth, BMW seventh, and Daimler, 10th.

The list of the 50 most innovative companies is based on a survey of 1,500 senior executives at a variety of companies, says a BCG report released on Wednesday.

In all, seven auto makers were recognized, with Tata Motors placing 26th, Renault 33rd and Volkswagen 35th.

Tesla first appeared on the list two years ago, placing 41st.
