Canadians haven't seen a new Ford Ranger since 2012 and it looks like we won't see a new one soon, despite Ford unveiling a rugged new facelift Monday at the Bangkok Motor Show in Thailand.

The compact pickup will be sold in more than 180 markets, but Canada and the U.S. are not on that list.

We have written numerous articles about the expanding market for full-size pickups such as Canada's best-selling vehicle the Ford F-150. However, there is less buzz around new offerings in the compact or mid-size pickup market despite rapidly increasing light truck sales.

The biggest changes to the new Ranger are the design and technology.

"When you look at how our customers use their vehicles, it's important that a Ranger looks and functions as a tough, dependable tool," said Dave Dewitt, exterior design manager at Ford Asia Pacific in a statement. "We saw an opportunity to give the design extra tension, and to emphasise 'Built Ford Tough' design elements like outboard nostrils – all while maintaining the Ranger's excellent aerodynamic characteristics."

Inside the truck, the dash and gauge cluster is designed to be similar to the 2015 F-150. It also comes with a new version of Microsoft's Sync infotainment system, front and rear park assist, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and a feature to alert the driver if he or she is becoming fatigued behind the wheel.

Under the hood, the Ranger is similar to past models with a 3.2-litre turbodiesel five-cylinder engine that can pump out 197 horsepower and 347 lb.-ft. of torque. There are also options for a 2.5-litre four-cylinder gas engine and a 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel that are good for 164 and 158 horsepower respectively. Ford says a redesigned exhaust gas recirculation system and the ability to for the engine to shut down when idling can boost fuel economy by up to 18 per cent.

"When we set out to improve upon the Ford Ranger, we knew we had our work cut out for us," said Richard Tilley, vehicle line director for Ford Asia Pacific, in a statement. "With improved efficiency, refinement and a range of smart new technologies, the new Ranger redefines what customers can expect from a tough and capable pickup truck."

The new model will go on sale in Europe in early 2016.
